Company Visit|UNIK WORLD Industrial · John

Augustine with John, second-generation leader of UNIK WORLD Industrial
Visiting UNIK WORLD, with John of the second generation.

This afternoon I went to look at a car. The salesman opened the trunk to show me the standard kit, and I crouched down to turn over the tire emergency set. The name printed on it belonged to a company I had visited that same morning.

A few hours earlier I had been standing in their showroom, listening to John explain how the thing works. A few hours later, there it was — in the trunk of a car I was considering buying.

UNIK WORLD IND. CO., LTD. makes tire emergency repair kits and vehicle air compressors. They export across Asia, Europe and North America. John ran through the carmakers they supply: Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Daihatsu, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Renault, Hyundai, Kia — and the list kept going. This is what a hidden champion looks like: you may pass their product every day and never once hear the company’s name.

They don’t sell air compressors. They sell the ten minutes on the roadside.

Before the visit, I thought of an air compressor as a tool. Afterwards I realised what they are actually dealing in is anxiety.

A flat tire never happens at a convenient moment. It happens when you’re rushing to pick up your kids, in a dim corner of an underground car park, or on the shoulder of a highway with traffic roaring past. You open the trunk and three thoughts arrive in order: Where is the spare? Do I even know how to change it? How long will a tow truck take?

And most new cars no longer carry a spare at all — cut for weight and for luggage space. What the manufacturer hands you instead is a repair kit. Whether that kit works is what decides between being back on the road in ten minutes and standing on the roadside for an hour.

A built-in battery sounds convenient. It is the most dangerous design.

Here is the detail most drivers never think about.

Most compressors on the market come with a built-in battery. Convenient — no cables, just grab it and go. But it sits in your trunk for a year or more, and nobody remembers to charge it. On the day you actually need it, how much charge is left?

John’s answer: in that situation you may not even finish a single tire before the power runs out. And then what about the rest?

UNIK WORLD does it the other way round: no built-in battery, powered entirely from the vehicle’s 12V supply. As long as the car starts, the unit has power. You never have to maintain it. It is simply always there.

But that choice creates an engineering problem. A 12V outlet can only deliver so much current. Getting enough inflation efficiency out of that limit to handle four tires in one go is not something you solve by fitting a bigger motor.

That is where the patents live.

Ten years ago: not one in a hundred thousand. Today: not one in a million.

Then John mentioned a number that stopped me.

Ten years ago, the carmakers’ requirement was not one defective unit in a hundred thousand — ship 100,000 units, and not a single one may fail. Today the standard has moved up to not one in a million: among a million units, still not a single one. Same production line, and the room for error has always been the same — zero.

It sounds punishing, until you put it back into context.

At the moment your tire goes flat, this device is your only rescue. If the rescue equipment itself fails, you are on the roadside with nothing. It isn’t a phone you can restart, or an appliance you can have fixed tomorrow. It gets exactly one chance — at the least convenient time, in the least convenient place.

The standard the carmakers set is simple: one hundred percent good product, delivered to every single customer.

That reminded me of my own industry. Aesthetic clinic patients will accept paying a little more, but they will not accept a mistake — it is their face, and there is no second take. Some businesses have a natural error tolerance of zero. What the customer is really paying for is the assurance that nothing goes wrong.

And a standard of not one defect in a million cannot be met by being careful on the assembly line. The real work happens where nobody sees it: inspection procedures, measurement equipment, laboratories. Every way the product could fail has to be reproduced, measured and pushed to its limit before you can design a safeguard against it.

That is when the patent wall finally made sense to me. Those patents were not dreamed up by an R&D department. They were forced out of the company by that level of demand. Every problem solved along the way — efficiency inside a 12V ceiling, not one defect in a million — left a certificate behind.

The patent wall in the meeting room — it fills the wall, then continues onto the pillars.

Step back, and all three walls are covered.

I stopped for a moment when I walked into that meeting room.

An entire wall, frame after frame of patent certificates — yellow, green, white — filling the wall and then continuing onto all four faces of the pillars. John said there are more than a thousand. Too many to display.

Everyone talks about moats. Standing in front of that wall, I saw for the first time what one physically looks like — not a single clever decision, but a thousand separate instances of “we’ll solve this one ourselves.”

That is a useful lesson for running a clinic. We tend to think differentiation is something you come up with. It isn’t. It is what slowly grows out of solving, one at a time, the problems everyone else walks around. People can copy your price list, your interior, your copywriting. What they cannot copy is the set of problems you have already solved.

The website is quiet on purpose.

One more thing I found interesting. Their official website is understated. It doesn’t put the products on display, and you can’t really tell from it how strong the company is.

At first that struck me as a waste — why not say more?

Then I understood it as a choice. Their customers are carmakers, not consumers; the business has never come from the website. And the less they say, the less a competitor can learn. Being quiet is not the same as being bad at marketing. It is knowing exactly who you are doing business with.

Which brings me back to John’s position as the second generation: he has to carry what the previous generation built, and at the same time decide what stays hidden and what should finally be seen. That is not easier than starting from scratch.

John

已久工業(UNIK WORLD IND.

John
